Wood-stock?
'That's the trouble with Geoff, he's too hasty'. One visit to one timber merchant, one look at one type of ply and I bought it. And now
I'm wondering is it any good? I realise now that the attractive grain and smooth finish on the 5.5mm ply that seduced me in the wood yard are both due to an extremely thin veneer on both sides of the ply. In Jim Michalak's book he mentions 'Lauan Underlayment Plywood' which has this make-up and, whilst he owns that is is a good material for lightweight boat construction he points out that sometimes the glue is not waterproof and I should boil a piece to test it (presumably to see if it falls apart).
Well he doesn't give the full recipe So I cut a 2" square piece and pop it into boiling water for 15 minutes. While I prod it around the
pan my wife takes a look at it, looks up at me and walks out 'I'm making soup' I call after her.
I don't want to see the result really, I don't want to see that little stock cube disintegrate ... After 15 minutes it hasn't and I
don't want to push my luck so, the experiment is over. The wood has passed but the soup needs something more.
