Home Progress Mike Fellows UK circumnavigation 2003 |
Mike Fellows sailed around the UK in 2003 in 'Kes' his Van de Stadt Kesterloo design, steel cutter rigged yawl.
'Since purchasing Kes, I had dreamt of sailing her around Great Britain. I knew that I was
retiring from the Fire Brigade at the end of December 2002. I had been planning this
adventure for about 18 months, collecting charts and any other information that would help
me in my circumnavigation of the UK. I gleaned an awful lot of useful information from
Roger Oliver. I had met Roger in 2002 at Blyth during his circumnavigation in his yacht
'Jalina' and we sailed in tandem as far as Whitby'

'...That was one of the few times that I wished I'd never heard of sailing, and was sat under a tree somewhere safe.
The waves took their toll on poor John, but to be fair they were huge 15ft+ waves, too big for John's stomach,
so he evacuated it once or thrice. We passed St Ives Bay. It
was very sunny and I'd put John on the helm to take his mind off his mal de mere'
'I wrote in the log, 'Kes' was designed for weather like this and loved it, unfortunately we weren't and didn't' |
