SAIL 8 Action on poverty in a recreation of D Day
On Wednesday 6th July 2005 world leaders will arrive in Edinburgh for the G8 Summit at Gleneagles. Bob Geldof would like them to be greeted by hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters demanding that those in power use this opportunity to save tens of thousands of lives every day by addressing the problem of world poverty. As part of this initiative Bob called on boat owners to form a massive flotilla to ferry participants across the Channel in order to take part in the protest known as ‘The Long Walk To Justice’. However, on the day many of the 70 boats registered to take part turned back because of adverse weather. 4 boats completed the trip but found no French protesters waiting for a lift on the other side of the Channel. Personally I think this was a fantastic idea and I was sorry that so few boats were able to participate. The decision by the others to pull out was probably the right one and, I am sure that the reason no-one was waiting on the other side was because they were aware of the conditions at sea. I congratulate those who did complete the voyage. Use the links below to tell us what you think and, if you are one of those who took part, even if you did not complete, please post your story.
